Understanding the Concept of Binaural Beat

In recent times, a great deal of research and scientific attention has been paid to binaural beat. Even as the study of the binaural beat is becoming more prevalent, a significant segment of the general population has not real idea what binaural beat is all about … even if they have hear the term. This is despite the fact that the whole concept of and research into binaural beat actually has very important and significant implications on many levels.

Through this article, you are presented with a general overview of the basics of binaural beat. By way of this article, you will have a better understanding of what research into binaural beat and the applications of binaural beat are all about today.

Technically speaking, binaural beat or binaural beats is defined as the auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, whose perception arises in the brain independently of physical stimuli.

What this means is that through a so-called binaural beat, the brain reacts. In other words, in the absence of a physical or “real” sound, the binaural beat causes the brain to respond or react. There is no physical stimuli causing the brain to act, respond or react. In most instances, sounds or tones that are the result of some sort of physical source cause the brain to act, respond or react. This effect, the binaural beat effect, was discovered in 1839 by a researcher named Heinrich Wilhelm Dove.

When the binaural beat effect occurs, the brain actually creates a similar phenomenon internally. Specifically, the brain really is functioning in response as if it has heard a physically occurring sound or tone.

The binaural beat can be demonstrated in a controlled, experimental environment when a different beat or tone is presented to a test subject in each of that subject’s ears. Rather than the brain recognizing or reacting to each of the different, individual tones, the brain actually mixes the tones -- as if the tones initially were presented naturally in a mixed form.

Researchers and scientists further explain that the frequency of these tones that will be subjected to the preternatural mixing mush be between 1,000 and 1,500 hertz for the beating (the binaural beat response) to be heard. In addition, the difference between two independent frequencies or tones that are utilized cannot be great. The difference between these two frequencies actually must be below approximately 30 Hz. Absent these conditions, most researchers and experts have concluded that the binaural beat cannot occur.

The binaural beat concept is being applied to a variety of different areas today. For example, it is being incorporated into relaxation techniques and programs with wider regularity today.
